Donations accepted for B.C. producers
The British Columbia Agriculture Council is collecting donations to help producers who have been affected by recent flooding in that province.
The council has already received $100,000 in donations, including $30,000 from Scotiabank, $25,000 each from CIBC and Envision Financial and $20,000 from Mertin Auto Group in Chilliwack.

Prairie Innovation Centre receives donation
The Manitoba Crop Alliance will contribute $100,000 to the Assiniboine Community College’s Prairie Innovation Centre for Sustainable Agriculture.

The donation is specifically earmarked for the centre’s Collaboration Zone, where education and industry connection will meet.
The new centre will combine indoor and outdoor facilities for hands-on learning experiences.
It is intended to be a hub for agricultural innovation and collaboration in the province.
Sask Pork honours swine researcher
Dr. Dan Columbus has received a Saskatchewan Pork Industry Award of Distinction from Sask Pork for excellence in production research.
Columbus is a research scientist in nutrition at the Prairie Swine Centre and adjunct professor in the University of Saskatchewan’s animal and poultry science department.
He joined the Prairie Swine Centre in 2015 and his academic contributions have helped obtain more than $5 million in research funding as principal investigator and co-investigator.
Some of Columbus’s work has focused on the impact of amino acids in disease-challenged pigs, neonatal under-nutrition and its effect on pig development and cardiovascular function, long-term effects of mycotoxin intake and defining protein quality.
He was also awarded the Canadian Society of Animal Science Young Scientist Award in 2019.
Ontario 4-H member receives dairy award
Mary Brander has received 4-H Ontario’s 2021 Bertram and Hazel Stewart 4-H Dairy Youth Education Award and Bursary.
Brander has been involved in 4-H since 2013 and has completed 56 clubs, including seven dairy clubs and various 4-H judging competitions.
She has participated in many calf shows and has competed at both the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair and the World Dairy Expo.
Brander is also an active volunteer in her community and helps with the Rockwood Parade of Lights, an event her family hosts each year.
The award and bursary of $1,000 is awarded annually to an eligible 4-H Ontario dairy club participant to support their post-secondary education. The bursary is awarded to the winner upon completion of their first year of post-secondary education and continuous involvement in a 4-H dairy club.
