November will be a busy month for rural women who like learning in groups.
The 22nd annual Peace Region Farm Women’s Conference will be held in Grande Prairie, Alta., Nov. 18-19 and organizers expect to draw 100 participants. A similar number of delegates are expected for the Canadian Farm Women’s Network conference in Saskatoon, Nov. 25-28.
The Peace region conference theme is “Into the 21st Century.” Keynote speaker Colleen Crozier, a family business consultant, will talk about the farm’s overlap between family and business. Sessions offered will include water and waste management, pregnant cow and calf health, marketing off the farm, streamlining meals and parenting skills.

The national conference being held in Saskatoon a week later will discuss issues facing women in agriculture today. The free labor of women and children are the subsidies for Canadian agriculture, said Carolyn McDonald, chair of the organizing group, the Saskatchewan Women’s Agricultural Network.
“Our federal government is not treating us as do the treasuries of other countries and we do not understand why world trade rules should apply differently to Canadian farmers,” she said in a news release.
Shelly Dahlman, SWAN’s representative to the national network, said the upcoming conference is important.
“Until I was a part of the CFWN there was no face on other commodities and regions of our country. Now I’ve met these women and listen with a more caring ear,” Dahlman said.
Topics on the agenda include world trade, rural health, intergenerational farm transfer, valuing unpaid farm work and the environment and biotechnology.
