MANITOBA

  • Frost hit areas south of Dauphin, including Brandon and Melita. Patchy frost was also reported in the Red River Valley.
  • Crop damage is highly variable in central regions, with corn, field beans, soybeans, flowering canola and buckwheat among hardest hit.
  • Winter wheat is being combined between showers at Neepawa, where it is yielding 60 bushels per acre.
  • Souris was affected by frost, with millet turning black and corn hit hard.
  • Pastures look good and second-cut haying is under way. Potato harvest is also progressing.

  • Crop development is slow in the Interlake, where lodging is also a concern. Only 10 percent of the cereal crop is ripe and swathing is under way.

SASKATCHEWAN

  • Frost was widespread across Saskatchewan, but areas west of Kindersley, Moose Jaw, Swift Current and Assiniboia escaped it.
  • Early barley, canola and wheat are turning at Elfros, where baling and silage are completed. Aphids are showing up in canaryseed in Foam Lake.
  • Grasshoppers and disease are reported in Springside, where peas are being desiccated and swathing has started. Cool nights and risks of frost are common.
  • Wheat is at the mid-hard dough stage with some colour change and barley is at the hard dough stage with some colour change. Flax is in good shape.
  • Flax bollworm is reported in the bolls and aphids are present at Lewvan. Grasshoppers are damaging cereal leaves, canola pods and lentils.
  • Cereals are in the soft dough stage, early cereals are being swathed and lentils are turning.

ALBERTA

  • Severe hailstorms caused damage in parts of central Alberta, with heavy rain slowing haying.

n Hail damaged several hundred acres of crop at Pincher Creek, where harvest is under way.

  • Yields are excellent to above average at Coaldale, where field peas and some early canola have been harvested.
  • Good heat and sunshine have bolstered crop development.
  • Silage operations are winding down at Red Deer, where corn is late and potatoes have been top killed.
  • Pastures are good at Rocky Mountain House, where strong yields are expected.
  • Thrips were reported in canola and sclerotinia were observed in wheat at Stony Plain.
  • Canola swathing and haying are under way at Peace River, where sub-surface moisture is rated poor to fair.
  • Aphids are reported around Mayerthorpe.
  • Canola and barley are turning colour at Westlock and swathing is expected to begin within the week.
