Satellite auction manager

Layton Bezan has become the Canadian partner for Superior Livestock Auction.

Last year, Superior Livestock sold close to one million head of feeder cattle on satellite. Its head offices are in Brush, Colo. and Fort Worth, Tex. It will be Bezan’s job to sign up feeder cattle for the fall run. Bezan was general manager of the Saskatchewan Beef Cattle Performance Association at the Saskatchewan Livestock Centre, near Regina.

Co-operative awarded

Federated Co-operatives Ltd. has won an award from the Canadian Feed Industry Association.

The CFIA congratulated FCL on its efforts to protect the environment, its support for good environmental management and its demonstration of corporate responsibility to its employees and neighboring communities.

FCL operates feed plants in Brandon, Man., Moosomin, Weyburn, Melfort and Saskatoon, all in Saskatchewan and Calgary and Edmonton, in Alberta. FCL is the central wholesaling, manufacturing and administration organization for the Co-operative Retailing System in Western Canada.

New Cargill officials

Cargill has named Ernest Micek as chief operating officer and president, replacing Hienz Hutter who retires this month.

Micek has been president of Cargill’s food sector, with responsibility for the company’s worldwide activities in corn and flour milling, oilseed processing and malt and cocoa operations.

Charolais news

Cam Stanek of Rosetown has been elected president of the Saskatchewan Charolais Association.

The SCA executive board consists of Stanek, Dave Delahey of Moose Jaw; Kim Harder of Clavet; Dwain Trask of Harris; and Mark Oram of Central Butte.

The Richard and Ardis Carlson family of Ponteix, Sask., have been chosen the 1993 Saskatchewan Charolais Association breeders of the year. They first began using Charolais in 1984.

Duane McCaffery of Edam is the recipient of the Saskatchewan Charolais Association booster of the year. He promotes the use of Charolais cattle in commercial operations.

Crop variety trials

The Manitoba crop variety trials will be expanded to provide farmers with a greater range of crop performance data. A $30,000 government injection will enhance three locally co-ordinated sites at Portage la Prairie, Grosse Isle and Beausejour.

Seed trade award

Vlado Puskaric of Pioneer Hi-Bred has received the Canadian Seed Trade Association’s 1994 Seed Achievement Award. It honors an individual who has contributed significantly to the seed industry.

Puskaric, the first commercial plant breeder to receive this award, is a corn breeder and research station manager at Woodstock, Ont.
