What about fertilizer type?

Along with adding more nitrogen to spring wheat, researchers in Alberta also examined the impacts that certain fertilizer brands had on yield and protein content.

They looked at Nutrien’s blend of 75 percent ESN and 25 percent urea, Corteva’s eNtrench/Instinct, Koch’s Agrotain (NBPT), EuroChem Agro’s NBPT-DMPSA and Koch’s SuperU.

They were applied at trial sites in Bon Accord, Barrhead and Lethbridge.

All brands hit the mark in preventing nitrogen loss to the atmosphere, preventing loss to leeching and preventing denitrification.

However, none of them appeared to have the edge over another when it came to boosting yield and protein content.

None provided better yield and, when it came to protein, Lethbridge was the only site that saw a slight boost from non-branded deep-banded urea application and from Koch’s SuperU.

Keep in mind the data is from a one-year trial and that climate conditions should be taken into account. Researchers plan to duplicate this for another four years. By then, they hope to have a better picture of how these applications affect protein and yield.
