Retired Alberta Reform MP Ray Speaker is not quite finished with parliament yet.

On Aug. 1, Speaker was one of three people appointed by the government to study compensation for MPs and senators.

Such a review is required by law after each election.

The commission must report to Parliament by the end of January 1998, recommending whether or not pay for members of parliament and senators should be raised.

At present, MPs earn an annual salary of $64,400 plus a tax-free expense allowance of more than $21,300.

Wage freeze over

Parliamentary compensation has been frozen since 1991. The freeze ends at the end of 1997.

Speaker, for 30 years an Alberta MLA and Reform MP for Lethbridge from 1993 to 1997, did not contest the last election.

The other commissioners are former Liberal cabinet minister Jean-Jacques Blais and Monique JŽrome-Forget, president of the Institute for Research on Public Policy.
