REGINA (Staff) – Saskatchewan Environment has advised people not to eat fish taken from the PFRA reservoir near Melfort. Dead fish found in the water may be related to the crash of a spray plane into a creek above the reservoir two weeks ago.
Aviation fuel and about 50 litres of the pesticide Lorsban, were spilled when the tail of the single-engine Cessna clipped a power line as the 17-year-old pilot flew under it. The plane crashed into some bush and landed in the creek. The water supply from the reservoir was shut off quickly, said SaskWater spokesperson Carol Bentley.
Dead fish might be the result of a localized summer kill resulting from oxygen depletion, but tests are being done to make sure, said department officials.
