Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts was US$39.74 per hundredweight March 15, up from $35.61 March 8.

U.S. hogs averaged $54.20 on a carcass basis March 15, up from $45.86 March 8.

The U.S. pork cutout was $68.89 per cwt. March 15, up from $65.04 March 1.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to March 16 was 2.452 million, down from 2.535 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.418 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the March 16 Signature Five price was C$128.64 per 100 kilograms, up from $120.44 the previous week.

Volatile temperatures expected for this winter

DTN is forecasting a lot of temperature variability in the Canadian Prairies this winter. Precipitation should be close to average.

On a per hundredweight basis, the price was $58.35, up from $54.63.

Bison

The Canadian Bison Association said Grade A bulls in the desirable weight range sold at prices from C$5.30-$5.60 per pound hot hanging weight. U.S. buyers are offering US$4.30 or more with returns dependent on exchange rates, quality and export costs.

Grade A heifers sold up to C$5-$5.40. U.S. buyers are offering US$4.15.

Animals outside the desirable buyer specifications may be discounted.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 877 sheep and lambs and three goats sold March 11. A light offering of sheep, lamb and goats sold aggressively at stronger prices.

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported that 677 sheep and 117 goats sold March 11.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $220-$245 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $230-$265, 70-85 lb. were $225-$255, 86-105 lb. were $190-$235 and 106 lb. and heavier were $183-$200.

Wool rams were $115-$149 per cwt. Cull ewes were $125-$150.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $180-$210 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $220-$250, 70-85 lb. were $220-$260, 86-105 lb. were $170-$215 and 106 lb. and heavier were $170-$197.

Hair rams were $135-$161 per cwt. Cull ewes were $122-$140.
