The Western Beef Development Centre has some new money and a new boss.
The government of Saskatchewan has announced it will provide the research facility with $900,000 over the next three years, along with two new research chairs and five years of technical support.
It also announced that the centre will become a division of the Prairie Agricultural Machinery Institute, a change it says will enable the two research centres to share resources and develop a strong working relationship for the benefit of producers.
“I have confidence that this change will enhance the ability of the WBDC to bring quality information to producers that will help us achieve our ultimate goal of increased profitability in the cattle industry,” provincial agriculture minister Mark Wartman told farmers attending the centre’s annual field day.

Wilfred Campbell, chair of the WBDC, described the announcements as “excellent news” for beef producers in the province.
He said funding has been an ongoing challenge since the centre was set up in 1996, and the new money will enable it to continue to operate and meet the industry’s needs for the foreseeable future.
