Young beef producers needed

The application deadline is June 1 for the Alberta Beef Producers Young Guns Contest.

The contest is open to those between the ages of eight and 21 who participate in 4-H Beef, junior cattle shows or beef production.

Three cash prizes are available: first place is $1,000, second is $500 and third is $250.

Entrants must answer the question: What connects you to the land in Alberta and how beef production and the environment — the land, water and air, conservation and stewardship — are connected.

AgSafe celebrates anniversary

AgSafe is marking its 25th anniversary as British Columbia’s agriculture health and safety association.

The organization offers safety resources to B.C.’s farmers and ranchers.

Formerly known as Farm and Ranch Safety and Health Association, it offers site-specific health and safety programs, training, evaluation and consultation services.

The non-profit also offers a Certificate of Recognition program for large and small employers.

Don Dahr, former WorkSafeBC director of industry and labour services, is the new chair of the AgSafe board of directors.

AgSafe’s services are also available to landscape trades and professionals, garden centres, wholesale and retail nurseries, suppliers, and tree services in the province.

4-H unveils scholarships

The 4-H Foundation of Alberta is providing the largest monetary scholarship in its history.

Starting this year, the Elmer and Ona Hansen Memorial Scholarship fund will annually award $80,000 to 10 Alberta rural farm youths, 25 years of age and younger, who have completed high school and are enrolled as a first-year student at a post-secondary institution.

The following monetary amounts will be awarded in 2018:

• first place: one $20,000 scholarship

• second place: one $15,000 scholarship

• third place: one $10,000 scholarship

• fourth to 10th place: seven $5,000 scholarships

Application forms are on the 4-H Alberta website, and the application deadline is June 30.

New AFAC executive announced

Cora Scheele of Linden, Alta., will serve as the new chair for Alberta Farm Animal Care. She has been a board member for five years.

Scheele is a hatching egg producer and a board member of the Alberta Hatching Egg Producers.

Also during the recent AFAC board meeting, James Jenkins was acclaimed vice-chair, Brent Bushell as finance chair and Casey Vander Ploeg as advisory council chair.

The remaining board members are Greg Bowie (past-chair), Laurie Fries, and Heini Hehli.

Darrell Dalton, registrar with the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association, will fill the remaining vacant position until next year.
