New woodlot listings released

The Alberta Agriculture and Forestry website now contains the directory called woodlot-forestry listings.

The listing provides information for primary and secondary wood manufacturers and firewood processors in the province.

It also includes tree growers (for landscaping, shelterbelt, forestry, and Christmas trees) who are involved in selling wood products, looking for services or obtaining information on wood and tree growing products.

Funding supportsorganics

The Mackenzie County Organic Success Program has invested $330,000 to support agricultural and food entrepreneurs in the Mackenzie County region of northwestern Alberta.

More than half of Alberta’s organic producers live in Mackenzie County and more are transitioning to organic production.

The funds will help provide long-term agronomic and marketing support to the region, which is further challenged by the area’s remoteness.

The program will also include a trade and marketing component, which plans to bring an annual buyers mission to the region.

The two-year program is a partnership between Organic Alberta and the Mackenzie Applied Research Association, with support from Mackenzie County and the Regional Economic Development Initiative for Northwest Alberta.

Support given to turkey sector

The federal government plans to provide almost $240,000 in funds to Turkey Farmers of Canada to assist producers meet standards for animal welfare, biosecurity and food safety.

The group received $98,235 to conduct the final government recognition stages of its On-Farm Food Safety Program, which will improve the credibility of production practices with buyers, stakeholders and consumers.

The organization also received $141,200 to amend its current Flock Care Program, which enables the turkey industry to demonstrate adherence to national standards for animal welfare.

As well, it provides buyers and consumers with the assurance that all animal welfare standards are met and up to date.

Angus members honoured

The Munton family, owners of Benchmark Angus, was recently honoured for 50 years of consecutive membership in the Canadian Angus Association.

Angus cattle have been a part of the family-run operation since 1960.

Today, Benchmark Angus has 300 Black Angus cows and 120 Red Angus cows.

Foundation honours Scown legacy

The Hunter Family Foundation recently donated $1.5 million to the SAM Centre, which is under the Calgary Stampede Foundation, for future development of the Vern Scown Gallery, named in honour of the well-known entrepreneur and auctioneer.

Scown’s daughter, Diane Hunter, and her husband, Doug Hunter, made the donation.

The SAM Centre on the Calgary Stampede grounds showcases Calgary’s western heritage through experiential programming, Stampede artifacts and stories.

Scown worked as an auctioneer for more than 60 years and as head auctioneer in Calgary for 21 years.
