Packaged vegetables are on a lengthy list of products subject to recall due to risk of listeria contamination, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has announced.

The products include Brussels sprouts, broccoli, carrots, kale, kohlrabi, cauliflower, broccoli coleslaw, stir-fry mixes, beets, red cabbage and various other packaged vegetable combinations that were distributed nationally.

Brands affected include Mann’s, Compliments and Western Family. All have best before dates from Oct. 11 to Oct. 20, 2017.

Rented farmland jumps 3.4 million acres in Saskatchewan and Alberta

Farmland rented or leased in the two provinces went from 25.7 million acres in 2011 to 29.1 million in 2021, says Census of Agriculture data.

The CFIA first announced the recall Oct. 20 and expanded it on Oct. 22 as its investigation developed. It warned consumers, retailers and food services including hotels, restaurants, hospitals and nursing homes not to consume, sell or use the products.

However, as of Oct. 22 there had been no reported illnesses in connection with the recall.

Those who have the listed products should discard them or return them to place of purchase, the CFIA said.

Symptoms associated with listeria include vomiting, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness. The elderly, pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable.

The CFIA said the recall was triggered by its own test results and an investigation is ongoing.
