Pulses: Indian government disposing of pulse stockpiles

Winnipeg, October 4 (CNS) – The government of India will dispose of its stockpiles pulses. India stockpiled pulses last year to control the prices. The pulses will be dispersed through auctions, selling at lower rates to areas of India and to various welfare programs.
Dry bean harvest is ahead of schedule in the midwestern United States, according to the Northwest Bean Growers Association. In Minnesota, harvest is 85 per cent complete, which is ahead of the average for this time of year of 81 per cent. In Wyoming, farmers have 63 per cent of the crop harvested, compared to the average for this time of year of 55 per cent.

Lentil yields are down this year in Idaho. A wet spell during the spring led to a prolonged dry spell which caused yields to suffer. According to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, lentil yields averaged 900 pounds per acre, down from 1,550 pounds per acre last year. Although chickpea acres were up in Idaho this year, yields are expected to be lower as well.
