Government will pay for solutions

The Manitoba government is giving $100,000 to a committee that will investigate new ways to handle the old problem of manure.

The Livestock Manure Management Initiative Inc. will review research proposals and fund pilot projects that reduce smell, make manure easier to handle and lessen environmental impacts.

The group will look for more funding from the private sector.

Garland Laliberte, former head of agricultural engineering at the University of Manitoba, leads the group.

Other members are: Jeanne Thompson, Consumers Association of Canada; Tony van Rosomalen, Bank of Nova Scotia; David Rolfe, Manitoba Pork, Dennis Hodgkinson, DGH Engineering; Deny St. George, Manitoba Hydro; Gary Stott, Elite Swine Inc.; Jim Elliot, University of Manitoba; Bill McLean, J.M. Schneider; Bill Roth, Union of Manitoba Municipalities; Don Zasada, Manitoba Agriculture; Norm Brandson, Manitoba Environment; Gerry Moore, Economic Development Board of Cabinet.
