RED DEER, Alta. – Development money from a special beef fund has been split five ways to promote new markets and research.

The industry development fund is a $21.62 million cache left over from the national tripartite stabilization account after the subsidy program was voluntarily stopped last year. The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association administers the fund.

The Canada Beef Export Federation will receive 34 percent to continue its pursuit of Asian beef sales. It also receives some federal government money, although with continuing federal budget cuts that support will ease off, said Larry Sears, chair of the industry development committee.

The Beef Information Centre will get about 24 percent to continue its national beef promotion campaign.

Research projects will receive about 25 percent and training programs, such as the feedlot quality assurance seminars, will receive 8.8 percent of available funds.

About seven percent hasn’t been allocated. It will be set aside for special needs, said Sears.
