WINNIPEG, Aug. 10 (CNS Canada) – The United States Department of Agriculture’s has increased its estimate for dry edible bean production to 1.55 million tonnes, a 19 per cent increase from previous forecasts.
Harvested acreage is forecast at 2.01 million acres, a 29 per cent jump from a year ago. The average yield is estimated to be 1,704 pounds per acre.
Field pea harvest in the United States is making good progress, according to Stat Communications. Reports say 55 per cent of the crop has been harvested, compared to an average of 50 per cent of this time of year.
India has placed an import quota on pigeon peas, also known as tur and arhar, but the restrictions would not apply to government commitments already agreed to. The Indian government said imports would be limited to two Lakh (200,000) tonnes. The move is designed to protect local pigeon pea producers by keeping out imports. India imported 703,540 tonnes of pegion peas in the previous year ending March 31.
