The little juice boxes that are a staple item in school lunch kits can now be recycled in Alberta.
As of Sept. 1, Alberta retailers will charge a five cent deposit on all beverage boxes including juice boxes and wax paperboard containers.
The program will be administered through the department of the environment, and the province hopes to recover and recycle more than 60 million juice boxes through the beverage container return system. The boxes must go back to one of 200 bottle depots rather than retailers.
Milk containers are exempt from this program.
The department said in a news release that in 1996, 80 percent of regulated beverage containers sold in the province were recovered and recycled.
Out-of-province containers are not accepted.
