Pulses: Pakistan looks to boost chickpea imports

Winnipeg, May 9 – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world pulse markets on Monday, May 9.

– According to a release from Alberta Pulse, Canada accounted for almost two-thirds of the 1.7 million tonnes of peas purchased by India between April to March of last year.

– Merchants from Pakistan are visiting Australia to see what can be done to increase chickpea imports. A report in Farm Weekly said the merchants were hoping to shore up supplies as Pakistan’s production of chickpeas has fallen from a high of 500,000 tonnes a few years ago, to about 300,000 tonnes.

– Between April 25 to May 1, Russia exported 12,500 tonnes of peas, according to a report on apk-inform.com.

– Yellow peas are attracting prices between C$11.68 to $13.40
per bushel at elevators across Western Canada. The same peas are
going for C$9.06 to $15.85 (Canadian) per bushel in North Dakota
and C$9.31 to $10.09 (Canadian) per bushel in Washington, Idaho,
according to the Prairie Ag Hotwire.
