Two Alberta high school students opposed to a large hog barn complex have designed a survey tailored to find out who else is opposed.
Joe Klassen of Czar and Sean Cullen and Amisk rejected several other topics for their high school English assignment before settling on a report about Taiwan Sugar Corp.’s planned hog barn south of nearby Hardisty.
“We went through a lot of things and thought it was the most controversial,” said Klassen.
They hope their report will help their English teacher and classmates understand why they think the barn would be a bad project for the area.
“I’m really hoping we inform him and other people about it,” said Klassen.
“We’re strongly opposed.”
Klassen’s family owns a cattle feedlot and Cullen’s family farms.
The pair distributed about 25 copies of the survey to people they thought were knowledgeable about the barn project.
They asked how the barns would affect the local economy and environment, and if the barns would be good for the quality of life.
