WINNIPEG, February 4 (CNS Canada) – The Canadian dollar strengthened against its US counterpart on Thursday, as a string of weak economic data pressured the US greenback.
At 8:45 a.m. CST the Canadian dollar was at US$0.7323 or C$1.3656 which compares with Wednesday’s North American close of US$0.7261, or C$1.3773.
The US saw increased jobless claims on Thursday, preceded by data showing climbing domestic crude oil stocks, and analyst speculation that the US Federal Reserve will not be able to raise interest rates this year.
There was no significant domestic economic data released by Statistics Canada on Thursday.
The TSX was stronger in early activity, up 88.84 points at 8:45 a.m. CST to sit at 12,681.86.
