Assess canola stands

Fall-seeded canola and some of the early-planted spring canola has emerged, which means it’s time to assess plant stands.

The plant stands for fall-seeded canola are generally quite variable and do not always follow the same plant stand recommendations as spring-planted canola.

The ideal plant stand for spring canola is seven to 11 plants per square foot. But fall-seeded canola can reach its full potential with a plant stand of five to seven plants per square foot.

It can do so because of the early start creating a much stronger, more vigorous plant.

The ability of canola to branch out and compensate is well known and thus the plants will be able to withstand stresses from all pests such as weeds, insects and disease.
