Canadian National Railway Company officially opened its new Gateway Intermodal Terminal recently at Harvey, Illinois, just outside Chicago.
The facility provides access to other major rail networks, as well as interstates 294, 94, 80 and 57, and Illinois 1.
“The inauguration of our new gateway intermodal terminal is an important part of CN’s major commitment in the Chicago area,” said CN president Paul Tellier, in a press release.
The 75-acre facility operates 16 hours a day, six days a week. First-year traffic predictions call for 100,000 to 120,000 intermodal unit movements through the facility and an average gate-handling time of two to three minutes. Normally, handling times run around five to six minutes.

“Gateway is just one part of CN’s major customer-service improvement strategy,” said Tellier. “Each strategy component is designed to promote better, easier and quicker access for domestic and overseas traffic throughout the CN system.”
CN has made several recent moves to increase its United States presence. The company has formed alliances with some of North America’s major rail and road carriers.
CN Intermodal recently reported an 11 percent revenue increase for the first quarter of 1997, compared to the same period last year.
CN is Canada’s largest and North America’s sixth largest freight railroad, based on 1996 revenues of $4.2 billion.
