Saskatchewan harvest moving forward: report

Winnipeg — Warm and dry weather conditions helped Saskatchewan farmers make good harvest progress during the week ended Aug, 31, with 29 percent of the crop now combined, according to the latest weekly report from the provincial agriculture department. Yields and grades were generally average overall.

An additional 30 percent of Saskatchewan crops were swathed or ready to straight combine. The harvest pace compares with the five year average of 14 percent combined, and the week-ago level of 16 percent done.

Farmers in southwest Saskatchewan are furthest advanced, having 51 percent of the crop combined. The northeast still has the most to go, at only 10 percent complete, according to the report.

Wet weather in the northern half of Alberta and dry weather in the south delayed harvest across the province during the week ended Aug. 19, 2025.

Provincially, topsoil moisture conditions on cropland were rated as three percent surplus, 78 percent adequate, 17 percent short and two percent very short. Hayland and pasture topsoil moisture conditions were rated as one percent surplus, 67 per cent adequate, 27 percent short and five percent very short.

Pasture conditions across the province were rated as four percent excellent, 43 percent good, 36 percent fair, 14 percent poor and three percent very poor. Crop reporters were indicating that 11 percent of forage crops did not get cut or baled, mainly due to lack of growth.

In addition to harvest activity, some winter cereals were also being planted during the week.
