Alberta releases latest crop report

SOUTH

More precipitation accumulated in the western areas and slowed harvest.

One-quarter of the crop is in the bin and 17 percent swathed.

Yield estimates improved to about 75 percent for spring wheat, durum, barley, oats and field peas, while canola declined slightly.

Surface and sub-soil moisture improved with an average rating of about 35 percent good to excellent.

Hayland and pastures improved with about 45 percent rated poor.

CENTRAL

Precipitation fell generally across the region but was heavier in the west.

Canada appoints new envoy to India

Canada announced on Thursday it had appointed a new high commissioner, or ambassador, to India in the latest sign of improving ties between the two trading partners.

Less than five percent of the crop is harvested and less than 10 percent swathed.

Yield estimates improved to about 80 percent for all crops except durum, which is unchanged.

Surface and sub-soil moisture conditions improved with about 55 percent rated good to excellent.

There was significant improvement in hayland and pastures, which are rated about 35 percent poor.

NORTHEAST

Light rain was reported in the eastern part of the region and light frost in the west.

Less than five percent of the crop is harvested and about five percent swathed.

Yield estimates improved by one bushel per acre for all crops.

Surface and sub-soil moisture ratings improved to about 40 percent good to excellent, while pasture and hayland are unchanged at about 25 percent good to excellent.

NORTHWEST

Light precipitation fell throughout with frost reported in many areas.

About five percent of the crop is harvested and about five percent swathed.

Yield estimates improved four to six bu. per acre except barley, which declined one bu. per acre.

Surface soil moisture conditions increased to about 20 percent good to excellent, while sub-surface moisture declined to about 15 percent good to excellent.

PEACE RIVER

Precipitation varied from light, spotty showers to 50 mm.

About five percent of the crop is harvested and about 25 percent swathed.

Yield estimates marginally declined by about .5 bushels per acre, except field peas, which increased one bu. per acre.
