WINNIPEG, August 6 – The Canadian dollar gained slightly against
its US counterpart Thursday morning as Statistics Canada released
data on active businesses and farm product prices.
At 8:45 a.m. CDT the Canadian dollar was at US$0.7598 or C$1.3161
which compares with Wednesday’s North American close of US$0.7583,
or C$1.3188.
In Canadian economic data, there were 1,250,822 active
businesses with employees in June and 2,586,343 active businesses
without employees, Statistics Canada said in a report on Thursday.
In Canadian agriculture, the June Ontario hogs price was C$91.50
per hundredweight, up 10.4 per cent from May, but down 21.2 per cent
from June 2014 when the price was C$116.09, StatsCan says.
According to StatsCan, the Manitoba canola price in June was
C$478.61 per tonne, up 2.5 per cent from May and up 4.1 per cent from
June 2014 when the price was C$459.87.
The TSX was stronger in early activity, up 11.94 points at 8:45
a.m. CDT to sit at 14,502.99.
