Latest crop report released for Alberta

SOUTH

Crops across the region are spotty, depending on the rain. Some rain west of Lethbridge and east of Medicine Hat has perked up crops.

Strathmore to Brooks, Acadia Valley and Vauxhaull need rain.

Cereal and peas are surviving by sending their roots into the subsoil moisture.

Canola crops are suffering from poor germination, frost and flea beetles.

More rain is needed.

Haying has begun, but swaths looking thin.

CENTRAL

Herbicide spraying is underway for weeds. Spraying was delayed until rain boosted crops and weeds. Crops generally need rain.

Alberta Crop Report: Rains in the south, dryness in the north

Rain fell onto the southern half of Alberta last week, while hot and dry conditions persisted in the northern half, according to the province’s crop report released on July 18.

Cereal and pea crops are showing the most promise because of good subsoil moisture.

Crops in the eastern part of the region are suffering more and need rain.

Forage and pasture crops need rain. Haying has begun.

NORTH

Haying has begun in areas that received rain. First cut will likely be thin.

Crops conditions are fair to good depending on showers. St. Paul and Lac la Biche are dry and need rain.

Barrhead in the northwest also needs rain.

Haying has begun. Producers are looking to tie up winter feed for their livestock.

PEACE

Some areas received a good soaker rain, and crops in those areas are doing well. Rain needed badly in northern Peace River areas of La Crete and High Level.

Crops around Grande Prairie and Falher are spotty.

Haying has begun but stands look thin. There are some concerns about grasshoppers.
