Areas of northern Alberta are wishing for the cooler, wetter weather seen in the south today because it would help fight wildfires now burning.

In the last 24 hours, 22 new wild fires have started in the province, according to provincial government officials.

There are 42 wild fires burning now. Ten are out of control, nine are being held and 23 are under control.

The agriculture and forestry department said the outlook remains severe for further fires and for firefighting until at least the end of the week.

However, there are no evacuation orders in effect and reception centres that housed some 4,800 evacuees earlier in the week are closed.

Air quality due to smoke has become a concern in the north, areas in and around Edmonton, the Cold Lake region and the Lethbridge area.

A province-wide fire ban remains in effect.
