Some site preparation began last week on the McCain Foods (Canada) French fry plant to be built near Coaldale, Alta. It was the first sign of construction at the site, located about 12 kilometres east of the town, near Chin, Alta.

A development permit has been issued by the County of Lethbridge, according to McCain Foods. The company now awaits final environmental approval before starting full construction.

The plant, expected to be in operation by spring of next year, will cost $93.9 million to build. It will employ 200 to 250 people.

McCain Foods recently awarded two construction contracts to McConnell Welding and Construction Ltd. of Brooks, Alta.

One contract is for the supply and installation of main service pipes, including those for steam, water, compressed air and other applications.

The other is for the installation of equipment in the plant’s boiler room.

McCain Foods is the world’s largest manufacturer of french fries with operations in 11 countries.
