BRANDON – Manitoba farm groups are working with a prominent agricultural economist on a provincial strategy for upcoming international trade negotiations
on agriculture.
Clay Gilson will help the groups identify the most important trade issues for the province in World Trade Organization talks, expected in about 18 months.
The president of Keystone Agricultural Producers, one of the groups involved with the project, said the province had limited say into the last round of negotiations.
“Because we don’t have really strong farm organizations in the rest of Western Canada, I feel it’s very important we start to get this on the table,” said Les Jacobson.
He said he hopes to have a draft strategy completed by mid-June.
