Alberta’s annual highway cleanup is scheduled for May 3 across the province.
Conducted by volunteers, the campaign is also a way for groups to earn money for their organizations. Groups can earn $55 to $100 per kilometre of ditch cleaned. Higher amounts are paid for highways near cities, where there is more trash.
Last year, the Alberta government paid out $904, 970 to 618 organizations that participated. About 147,000 people helped clean more than 10,500 km of roadway in 2013.
Drivers are advised to be aware of cleanup efforts and proceed with caution in areas where volunteers will be at work.
