Lenard Carpenter has pleaded not guilty to charges of failing to provide food, water, shelter and care to 3,000 head of cattle and 50 horses.

The Vermilion, Alta., resident was charged after the Saskatchewan SPCA found the animals in poor condition in a leased pasture near Loon Lake, Sask., on Oct. 29, 2004. Some of the animals had already died.

At that time the animals’ owners were contacted and arrangements made to move them from the site.

A trial date for Carpenter was to be set in court in Loon Lake on April 26.
