A case of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus was confirmed at a Montana hog farm yesterday.

The Montana department of livestock is working with the farm but details on its location have not been released, said a news release from the state.

State veterinarian Dr. Marty Zaluski said the department is working with the producer, attending veterinarians and the Montana Pork Producers Council to contain the outbreak to the premises.

Montana has about 500,000 hogs, mostly in the central region of the state.

First discovered in the United States last April, PED has spread to 24 states and five farms in Ontario. More than 2,100 separate positive cases have been reported and more than one million piglets have died.
