After almost half a century of providing trees to Alberta farmers, the provincial tree nursery will be privatized.

That is in keeping with the government’s goal of privatizing its operations, said Don Macyk, director of the plant industry division of Alberta Agriculture.

The tree nursery located in Edmonton is now operated by Marketland Corporation, owned by the Berggren family of Bowden. The family has worked in the nursery business through Alberta Nurseries and Seeds.

Since 1951, the province’s agroforestry program has provided more than 100 million seedlings throughout the province for fields and farm shelterbelts in

Alberta.

Chris Berggren said sale and distribution of shelterbelt trees and distribution of Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration trees will continue the same as before.
