Canadian credit unions have scored at or near the top of most categories in a survey of financial institutions in Canada.
Ipsos Reid, a polling and research firm, questioned consumers about service from all financial institutions including the five big banks, credit unions and other smaller lenders.
On Aug. 29, the results were in and credit unions did well and the large banks not so well.
As it announced 2013 Best Banking Awards, Ipsos reported that on the question of ‘customer service excellence,’ credit unions rated first.

On the question of ‘values my business,’ credit unions were first.
When asked about financial planning and advice from financial institutions, credit unions were included with Bank of Montreal, Royal Bank and ScotiaBank.
CUs rated first on the question of branch service excellence and was second in ‘mobile banking excellence.’
The CU sector also scored first in the ‘live agent telephone banking excellence’ category.
Among the large chartered banks, TD Canada Trust was rates the best in customer service excellence.
Adrian Murphy, Ipsos Reid vice-president in charge of the financial services survey, said in a statement with release of the results that last year’s results continued a trend.
“The 2013 awards market the ninth consecutive year in which Canada’s credit unions have won the overall Customer Service Excellence ward among all financial institutions in the retail banking sector,” he said.
Murphy also noted that the credit union sector also won seven awards overall.
