EDMONTON – The pork industry’s image is so bad that the Alberta organization has hired a public relations specialist to improve it.

“The producers have been begging for it. They know we need it,” said Roger Charbonneau, chair of the Alberta Pork Producers Development Corporation.

“I just can’t wait for it. The way agriculture is viewed in the last year has made it more important.”

The corporation has hired Paul Hodgman, formerly with Growing Alberta, to travel the province talking about everything from food safety to manure handling.

Instead of spending money on advertisements, the organization wants to spend time trying to get its message across to small groups that there are more pluses than minuses to the hog industry.

“We acknowledge the areas where we can improve and we have a commitment to improve,” said Charbonneau.
