Disease research gets grant

MBEC BioProducts Inc., has received an Alberta Agriculture Funding Consortium grant of $330,000 to help develop controls for biofilm diseases, which include fusarium and potato ring rot.

Biofilm diseases, which include fungal and bacterial plant vascular diseases, cause hundreds of millions of dollars of crop losses each year in Western Canada.

None of the diseases is controlled adequately by current treatments, MBEC BioProducts said in a News release

news.

“The expertise and technology of MBEC BioProducts will not only allow for a vast improvement in the scientific understanding of these diseases, but it will also lead to the identification and development of novel solutions to treat these diseases,” said Ken Boutilier, president of the company.

MBEC is a subsidiary of Innovotech Inc.
