Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 1,116 sheep and lambs and 53 goats sold Oct. 22. Light lambs sold steady. Heavy type lambs sold barely steady to $10 cwt. lower. Good sheep traded $5-$10 cwt. higher. Goats traded barely steady.

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported that 1,325 sheep and 430 goats sold Oct. 22.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $190-$220 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $190-$225, 70-85 lb. were $185-$203, 86-105 lb. were $181-$200 and 106 lb. and heavier were $180-$191.

Wool rams were $82-$128 per cwt. Cull ewes were $90-$135.

Canola support gets mixed response

A series of canola industry support measures announced by the federal government are being met with mixed reviews.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $169-$194 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $164-$195, 70-85 lb. were $170-$187, 86-105 lb. were $173-$187 and 106 lb. and heavier were $170-$185.

Hair rams were $77-$128 per cwt. Cull ewes were $80-$135.

Bison

The Canadian Bison Association said Grade A bulls in the desirable weight range sold at prices from C$5.75-$6 per pound hot hanging weight. U.S. buyers are offering US$4.60 or more with returns dependent on exchange rates, quality and export costs.

Grade A heifers sold up to C$5.55-$5.80. U.S. buyers are offering US$4.40.

Animals outside the desirable buyer specifications may be discounted.

Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts was US$45.70 per hundredweight Oct. 26, up from $45.32 Oct. 19.

U.S. hogs averaged $57.06 on a carcass basis Oct. 26, down from $58.72 Oct. 19.

The U.S. pork cutout was $77.54 per cwt. Oct. 26, down from $78.42 Oct. 19.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to Oct. 27 was 2.569 million, down from 2.589 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.515 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the Oct. 26 Signature Five price was C$147.16 per 100 kilograms, down from $151.07 the previous week.

On a per hundredweight basis, the price was $66.75, down from $68.52.
