The Winnipeg Humane Society will release a pig from a sow stall at the Manitoba Legislature Oct. 2 to mark World Farm Animals Day.The pig released on the front steps of the provincial capital won’t be a real sow, but will be a model sow the society uses in its campaign against stalls in the province. The release is designed to generate public interest in the issue, said John Youngman, a director of the Winnipeg Humane Society.”It really doesn’t make too much difference if they (sows) are set free by way of legislation, or by way of voluntary producer action,” Youngman said. “We know that Manitoba pork producers are talking about it … and we’d like them to take that further and voluntarily phase out sow stalls.”With a provincial election a year away, there is a chance that sow stalls could become a political football in Manitoba. “Every time an animal welfare organization takes a poll of consumers here in Canada … they find that (people) overwhelming care about the welfare of farm animals and they want them to be treated humanely, even if the (animals’) ultimate fate is food.”
