The Welcome to the Farm Show documentary series is a new way to tell important stories that the Western Producer is experimenting with and that I think you’re going to like.

If you’ve recently visited the Western Producer’s website, you may have noticed that the first episode of the second season of Welcome to the Farm Show is now available to stream.

For those of you who haven’t already watched it, go to producer.com to access the documentary series that was shot at Ag In Motion last summer.

You can find all our Ag in Motion coverage here

You can find it at the top of our home page, just to the left of the Western Producer’s logo.

This episode, titled To Store or to Sell, begins with a conversation I had with Paul Brisebois, senior vice-president of AGI, about the company’s effort to meet the grain storage and handling needs of farmers.

The show also has an interview with Ed Broschinski, lead grain market analyst with Cargill, who speaks about market signals, forecasts and the practical storage options available to farmers.

When we were planning the documentary series, we couldn’t have known how timely its release would be.

I recall thinking back in June, when another widespread drought was still possible, that I hoped this episode didn’t offend farmers that hadn’t harvested a decent crop in years.

But here we are, with bin-busting yields being reported in wide swaths of the Prairies and trade disruptions that continue to limit the market access to important customers of Canadian grain.

Grain storage and marketing is a major issue across North America this fall, considering the United States also harvested a huge crop.

A recent report from CoBank’s Knowledge Exchange said that among the top 12 corn-producing states, the U.S. is facing a 1.4-billion-bushel shortage of upright grain storage this year with elevators relying more on bunkers and emergency storage such as ground piles. Last year, those states had a combined 361 million bu. of excess storage.

This situation is made much worse because U.S. farmers are also facing trade disruptions with China as that country stops buying their crops, most notably soybeans.

The Welcome to the Farm Show documentary series is a new way to tell important stories that the Western Producer is experimenting with and that I think you’re going to like.

We worked with professional documentarians to make sure we produced a quality show for our audience.

Farmers can’t know when and where the next trade or transportation issue will arise, but they can move to protect themselves from it with smart approaches to grain marketing and storage.

To Store or to Sell has experts on grain storage and marketing that understand this dilemma that farmers face year after year.

Now playing on a smart device near you, Welcome to the Farm Show: Season 2.

The second season of the the Western Producer’s documentary series launched Oct. 8, with episode one, To Store or to Sell? about grain market signals, forecasts and storage options.

Follow all our Ag in Motion coverage here

Welcome to the Farm Show provides a closer look into what goes on at Ag in Motion, the annual outdoor farm show held near Langham, Sask. in July. The first season launched in fall 2024 at Canadian Western Agribition in Regina.

The second season features four episodes on topics of livestock showing, technology and show operators.

The season premiere features Western Producer editor Robin Booker speaking with Paul Brisebois, senior vice-president of AGI’s North American farm business, about the permanent infrastructure that AGI has set up at the Ag in Motion show site.

It also includes a discussion with Ed Broschinski, lead grain market analyst with Cargill, on the volatility that farmers can face and the many hats they wear.

“Not only is a farmer now a mechanic, a logistics co-ordinator, an accountant … now they’ve got to be a market analyst,” he says in the episode.

“And they’ve got to predict things that are going to happen in the future in a very uncertain market.”

Many topics are touched on in the first episode, including the looming impact of tariffs. In the media release for season two, Glacier Farm Media states, “the goal of the series is not only to share stories from Ag in Motion but also to remind farmers that they are not facing these challenges alone.”

Ag in Motion is often referred to as a “pop up town,” amassing average attendance of 30,000 people over the three days. That town does feel like a farm-based community, with many people seeing and speaking to those they don’t often see or making new connections.

Oriahna Rhinas, attending the show to claim the Rhinas family’s win of the 100-ton fertilizer bin from Corr Grain Systems, says in the episode that these feelings are one of the reasons for attending the show.

To watch season two, visit the Welcome to the Farm Show landing page or the Western Producer’s YouTube channel. The next three episodes will be released in the upcoming months.

The final episode of the Western Producer’s documentary series, Welcome to the Farm Show, wrapped up with the premiere of episode three, Six Inches of Topsoil.

The final episode of the Ag in Motion series highlights the crops themselves, something that every farmer, old or young, likes to take a look at. Episode three focuses on the changes in varieties, difficulties in the growing season and markets.

There are typically 30 company crop plots on the 640 acres of land that’s home to Western Canada’s largest outdoor farm show near Langham, Sask. They’re seeded each spring by the exhibiting companies, so that come July the different varieties are displayed and available for attendees to walk through, touch the leaves and examine roots.

“With these test plots, you can see the varieties that you’re thinking about bringing into your farm because it is a big decision of the varieties that you’re choosing,” Western Producer editor Robin Booker said in the documentary.

“So here, you can walk around, you can see multiple companies, multiple varieties side by side and you can see, ‘well, you know this works here in Langham, this may be something that I want to bring home to my farm.’ ”

These crop plots have been a differentiator since the show’s inception. It offers farmers a chance to see different genetics year to year and variations in fertilization and pesticide programs. They have become a draw for companies and farmers alike because it’s the only show with living plants side by side, comparing competitors and older varieties to the new.

Rob O’Connor, Ag in Motion show director, is more aware of the ever changing atmosphere than some. He’s seen many changes come through Saskatchewan agriculture with crops, equipment and technology. Some of those changes have been exhibited in AIM’s crop plots.

“On the genetic side, 30 years ago to have corn grown in Saskatchewan, I mean, it was unheard of,” he said.

“Now we have short day corn that’s able to grow and be profitable in in this environment, which never happened 30 years ago. So we’re seeing improvements in genetics there.”

NorthStar Genetics is one of the companies that have focused on these changes with corn. Tyler Russell, the company’s western Canadian manager, spoke in the episode about these changes and the growing interest in corn.

However, he said the more interesting part of the show to him is the variety of people who he meets.

“There’s so many different types of customers we get to see,” he said.

“Some of them have grown our products, so they come and say, ‘hey, what else do you got coming, what’s your new ones?’… Others are ranchers or farmers that are intrigued, (saying), ‘hey, corn is really growing in the marketplace. Take me through it.’ ”

That’s part of what makes Ag in Motion the show it is — opportunites to see what’s available, visit and ask questions and find what’ll fit best.

“It’s a great interaction, too, because they’re not a used car salesman or vacuum salesman, right?” said O’Connor.

“Like, it’s not the hard sell at Ag in Motion. It’s really a softer sell, more casual. Come and see what we have. You know, we’ll sit down and we’ll have a drink. We’ll sit in the sun or in the shade — just look at the plants.”

With the airing of the final episode of the documentary series, O’Connor is excited for this year’s show, which is four months away.

AIM has become a notable place to feature innovations, launch new products, showcase Canadian-made and create new relationships. The many distinct features of the show have grown it to national and international recognition. O’Connor expects many delegations to be arriving again this year, especially with looming tariff threats and the precariousness of global relations.

“I think we’ll start seeing more of countries coming to Western Canada because they want what we have. Whether it’s the grains, the pulse crops, the beef cattle, the equipment or the seed genetics or any of that technology that we’re developing for dryland farming, I expect all these other countries will start knocking at our door.”

Episode three, and the previous two episodes of Welcome to the Farm Show, are available on the Western Producer’s YouTube page.

During a private event hosted by Glacier FarmMedia during the 2025 Crop Production Show, the second episode of the Western Producer’s documentary series, Welcome to the Farm Show, made its debut.

On Jan. 14, guests gathered in the high tower of the Sheraton Cavalier in Saskatoon for the premiere of License to Drive. It showcases equipment close-ups, in-the-cab footage and equipment exhibitors.

Episode 2 of the Welcome to the Farm Show documentary series, called License to Drive, was released during the 2025 Crop Production Show in Saskatoon. | YouTube/@ProducerAg screencap

This is the second of three episodes in the documentary series, which is a behind-the-scenes look at what happens during Ag in Motion, the annual outdoor farm show that happens every July near Langham, Sask.

With the equipment focus in mind, GFM’s machinery editor, Scott Garvey, is featured sharing his knowledge. Many will know Garvey from his videos and articles on all different types of farm machinery.

In the film, Garvey shared tidbits such as how and why farm machines adopted tracks instead of tires and what being at the show is like, likening it to DisneyWorld for farmers.

This episode’s focus is on the big equipment, while the first episode features cattle and livestock handling equipment. Episode one launched in November during Canadian Western Agribition. The third and final episode will launch in February.

Melonee Ochitwa, GFM’s Saskatchewan sales and sponsorship co-ordinator, has had a hand in the organization of Ag in Motion for the last three years and has also appeared in the documentary.

She shared her excitement about the series and at seeing the second episode come to life, after having a sneak peak at some of the clips before hand.

“It’s amazing when it all comes together, and it’s always so exciting. And it always amazes me how they can kind of take all these little pieces and put it together and make it a show.”

Ochitwa has a background in agricultural manufacturing, and comes from a farm family, so she’s familiar with what’s important to farmers when looking at equipment. Ag in Motion is a great spot to do it, too, she added, with the ability to do more than just look.

“It really gives them those touch points of being able to see … but when they can actually experience it, feel it, see it run, it just makes all the difference.”

A crowd of ag-minded individuals gathered during the 2025 Crop Production Show to watch the premiere of License to Drive, the second in a series of documentaries featuring the Ag in Motion farm show near Langham, Sask. | Janelle Rudolph photo

The show features equipment demonstrations and the ability to test drive the machinery. Garvey gets the chance to do just that in the documentary, even having a little competition with Western Producer editor Robin Booker.

This casualness adds to the community feel of the show, which Garvey and Ochitwa say is a key piece of it.

“It doesn’t matter whether you’re a competitor, you know, side by side,” Ochitwa said.

“When you’re at Ag in Motion, everybody is friends, you’re all friends in the business trying to provide the best solution for our farmers.”

Episode two, License to Drive, is available on YouTube. Episode one, Working Cattle, and other ag videos, such as Garvey’s equipment features, are also available on the Western Producer’s YouTube channel.

Glacier FarmMedia – Glacier FarmMedia hosted a private event at Canadian Western Agribition Nov. 27 to launch the first episode of the Western Producer’s documentary series, Welcome to the Farm Show.

Set around the events of the 2024 Ag in Motion, which takes place every July near Langham, Sask. and is one of the biggest farm shows in Western Canada, the first episode is called “Working Cattle,” and focuses on the cattle producers who attend Ag in Motion and the equipment that is shown at Ag in Motion for the cattle sector.

Rob O’Connor, show director of Ag in Motion, said at the launch that he was very excited to see the first episode of the documentary go live.

“To have something this dedicated to the show out there for people to see, and to listen to the different people who participate at the show and how it affects them, it’s kind of cool,” he said following the premiere.

The first episode features O’Connor both on his ranch and at Ag in Motion, working to make the event run smoothly. It also features Canadian Cattlemen editor Lisa Guenther, Glacier FarmMedia lead of exhibit sales and programming Melonee Ochitwa and many people within the industry.

O’Connor said Ag in Motion is a pinnacle of the agriculture industry, and so it is important to showcase it in this way.

“I think it’s an opportunity for the industry to showcase what’s out there for the people who are investing in that industry and producing the ingredients that go into our food,” he said.

“I just really like the focus on how the different aspects of the livestock industry, whether it’s the manufacturers or the livestock producers, are benefiting from (Ag in Motion). The trade show aspect is about business, but it does more than that. It’s not just creating business, it’s also supporting the lifestyle of those people.”

“I’m really excited about how we’re going to probably see the next two episodes evolve into how many more people are affected by the show, and the positive outcomes that it gives to the community and to those people’s businesses,” O’Connor said.

I’ve done many interviews since I was hired at the Western Producer 12 years ago but this summer I experienced an interview in a new way, in which I was asked the questions.

It was for a documentary series called Welcome to the Farm Show for which the Western Producer hired a documentary team to show how Ag In Motion, Western Canada’s largest outdoor farm show, is put together.

For three days every July, a new village springs to life near Langham, Sask. It’s made up of 100 acres of exhibitors, farm equipment and animals and it attracts more than 30,000 visitors.

As you can imagine, the event requires thousands of hours of work and a high level of coordination.

Welcome to the Farm Show is our attempt to show readers how it all comes together, by talking to the people who run it and to Glacier FarmMedia reporters who’ve covered the show since it started.

The first season was filmed leading up to and during Ag in Motion last summer. It has three episodes that will be released this winter.

The first episode is called Working Cattle and it premiered at a private event at Canadian Western Agribition on Nov. 26 and was released to the public the following day.

This episode has Glacier FarmMedia staff including Lisa Guenther, Rob O’Connor  and Melonee Ochitwa.

It also has representatives of Neeralta, Green Aero Tech, TL Andrew Livestock, Huber Ag Equipment, Ritchie Ag Equipment and Highline Manufacturing.

Episode 2, License to Drive, premiers at the Western Canadian Crop Production Show Jan. 14, and will be available for all to view on Jan. 15.

Scott Garvey and I are in this episode, along with representatives from equipment companies that participated at Ag in Motion, and some farmers who tested equipment at the farm show.

The third episode is called Six Inches of Topsoil and will be released in February.

If you’re interested in how Ag in Motion is brought to life, visit The Western Producer’s website to get a sneak peak of this documentary series.

The trailer and Episode 1, Working Cattle is already available on the Welcome to the Farm Show landing page and on The Western Producer’s YouTube channel.
