Vanscoy potash mine scales down

Nutrien is lowering its Vanscoy potash mine’s annual operational capability from 2.2 to 1.7 million tonnes, which will result in laying off about 20 staff and 60 hourly positions in the third quarter of 2019.

The crop inputs and services company said it is trying to stay competitive in the potash market, which is in state of recovery.

However, Nutrien expects to increase production at its lower cost mines and anticipates about 80 vacancies at other Saskatchewan sites over the remainder of 2019.

Nutrien has about 4,000 employees in Saskatchewan.
