Your Editorial Notebook, “Canadians deserve reliable weather service” (WP, April 7) was first rate. There is an important extension to the picture you presented.

You pointed out cuts in service were made in the mid-1990s and have not been restored. To restore services money is needed. Many other programs also need to be bolstered.

Governments require revenues if they are going to do these jobs. But the only thing we hear from some quarters is “cut taxes,” “lower taxes,” etc. That will solve everything.

Sure, I like to see lower taxes. But I also know that many programs such as the weather service have to be improved. The value received is far greater than the additional costs.

We are not going to solve problems by huge corporate tax breaks, buying new jets with a blank cheque and running a war we cannot win and should not have gotten into.
