Loblaw Companies Ltd., Canada’s largest food distributor, has chosen a location five kilometres west of Regina as the new $200 million home for a western Canadian distribution facility.
It will be the first major operation connected to a new Canadian Pacific Railway intermodal facility, which is part of a $93 million infrastructure project taking advantage of container loading, the CPR mainline and proximity to the Regina airport, the Trans-Canada Highway and Highway 11.
The giant 500,000 sq. foot warehouse is expected to employ 700 people in the first phase with potential to double in size by 2017.
The centralization plan will see Loblaw close other warehouses in Western Canada.
