Council appointed
Twenty-seven people have been appointed to the Alberta Environmentally Sustainable Agriculture Council.
The appointments were announced in mid July by Alberta agriculture minister Ed Stelmach. The council has the goal of encouraging the industry to protect the environment while remaining competitive in world markets.
The members: are Bruce Beattie, of Sundre; Roger Bryan, of Camrose; Ken Dietzler, of Lacombe; Doug Hall, of Airdrie; Bernard Kotelko, of Vegreville; Colin Kure, of Innisfail; Gerry Lewis, of Edmonton; Glenn Logan, of Lomond; John Petruic, of Calgary; Don Sawyer, of Condor; Ron Svanes, of Carmangay; Donna Tingley, of Edmonton; Harold Unruh, of Vauxhall; Charles Westra, of Gibbons; Ben Boettcher, of Wanham; Brian Colgan, of Edmonton; Don Fluney, of Dewberry; John Kolk, of Picture Butte; Fred Kraft, of Edmonton; Renald Lamoureux, of Fort Saskatchewan; Gary Lilge, of Valleyview; David Oseen, of Turin; Charles Rypien, of Athabasca; Bill Stewart, of Hairy Hill; Jack Swainson, of Red Deer; Clifford Tuininga, of Neerlandia; and Nico van der Giessen, of Bezanson.

SPCA award
Nominations are being accepted for the farmer of the year award designated by the Alberta Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The award is presented annually to a successful Alberta farmer whose husbandry methods take into account both the physical and psychological well-being of animals.
Deadline for nominations is Oct. 3. Official nomination forms can be ordered from the Alberta SPCA, 10806 124 Street, Edmonton, T5M 0H3.
The award will be presented Nov. 15.
Olds and UGG partners
Olds College and United Grain Growers are partners in a swine enterprise that is a practical component of classroom studies.
Students at the agricultural college will be involved in a UGG swine facility demonstration site operated under its subsidiary companies, Unifeed and Unipork Genetics.
Through the partnership, students in the swine program will be exposed to producers, processors and marketers in the hog industry.
