Scholarship deadline

The Canadian Western Agribition Scholarship program is accepting applications. The scholarships are worth $1,000 annually to applicants entering their second year of post-secondary or graduate studies.

Applicants must also have participated in Regina’s Canadian Western Agribition as an exhibitor in livestock events, 4-H youth competitions, the grain and forage show or trade shows.

Agriculture ministers agree to AgriStability changes

federal government proposed several months ago to increase the compensation rate from 80 to 90 per cent and double the maximum payment from $3 million to $6 million

Sponsored by the Barley Development Council, the 1996 Malting Barley Production Competition will send six farmers to Asia, Latin America or the United States to meet malting barley customers.

Submitted samples will be judged by representatives of grain and malting companies. More information is available from provincial agriculture departments.

Management changes

Brian Manning is the new president and managing director of Alberta’s Agriculture Financial Services Corporation.

He replaces Bob Splane, who succeeds Harold Thornton as part-time chair of the corporation’s board. Thornton retired as chair in April.

4-H council members

Five new members have joined the Alberta 4-H council’s 20-member board of directors: Cheryl Mueller, Lacombe, alumni; Greg Hawkwood, Cochrane, Calgary region; Otto Wedman, Wetaskiwin, west-central region; Carole Tkach, Coronation, east-central region; and Aaron Fehlaurer, Edmonton, northwest region.

Four members recently retired from the board: Bill McGrath, Vermilion, northeast region; Jim Sailer, Trochu, Calgary region; Brett Bonde, Calgary, alumni; and Gordon Schaber, Leduc, northwest region.
