Manitoba

Rains delayed harvest operations.

East

  • Most cereals and canola have been harvested. Yields are poor.
  • Winter wheat is yielding 15-40 bushels per acre, with below average quality. Spring wheat is yielding 10-15 bu., barley 20-40 bu., oats 35-60 bu. and canola 10-15 bu.
  • Rains have softened crusted soil.
  • Winter wheat being seeded.

Interlake

Central

  • Yields variable with wheat 10-15 bu. in east and 35-50 bu. further west. Quality poor due to small kernels, low protein and fusarium.
  • Barley is yielding 20-70 bu. with highest yields in the west. Oat yields are 20-70 bu. with low sample weights. Canola is yielding two to 15 bu. in east and 20-30 bu. in west. Pea yields are variable from 20-30 to 45-50 bu.
  • Late-sown crops await swathing, with yields expected to vary due to drowned out areas.
  • Soybeans are podding, sunflowers look better and are starting to fill. Flax is being desiccated with reasonable yield potential.
  • There is little second cut hay.

Southwest

  • Winter wheat harvest is nearly complete with yields 25-45 bu. and lower bushel weight and quality.
  • Some barley has been harvested with yields of 35-40 bu. and below average quality. Oats are yielding 90-110 bu. while pea yields are low at 20 bu. Lentils are also below average at 1,000-1,200 lb. per acre.
  • Most canola has been swathed south of Trans-Canada Highway and only 50 percent north.
  • Low sclerotinia levels in canola, with alternaria black spot reported.

Northwest

  • Swathing is progressing slowly with only 15-20 percent of wheat, barley and canola down.
  • About eight percent has been combined. Low yields reported.
  • Winter wheat harvest is finished.
  • Borage and grass seed crops are being swathed.
  • Cereal silage is well advanced with variable yields.

Saskatchewan

Rain and cool weather have delayed harvest operations.

Northeast

  • Winter wheat and fall rye are now being combined. Early barley and peas are being combined.
  • Swathing has started in wheat and canola.
  • Reports of crop damage from sawflies, diamond back moths, mildew and lodging.

East-central

  • Swathing is now general in barley, peas and canola.
  • Rains may downgrade swathed barley from malt to feed.
  • Wheat in hard dough stage.

nYields are above average for early wheat and barley fields.

  • High populations of flea beetles are reported in some canola fields. Sawfly is a major problem with some fields at 90 percent infection.

Southeast

  • Winter wheat and fall rye are nearing completion.
  • Swathing is general in wheat, peas and canola.
  • Desiccation of pulses continues. Combining is advancing in peas (40 percent), lentils (20 percent) and chickpeas (19 percent).
  • Disease pressure is moderate with rust in wheat, ascochyta in peas and sclerotinia in canola.

West-Central

  • Winter wheat and fall rye combining continues.
  • Canola, peas and wheat swathing is general with some combining.
  • Combined wheat and barley fields are showing high yields while pea yields are down from last year.
  • Chickpeas are starting to mature. Lodged crops are a concern.
  • Grasshoppers, lygus bugs, sawflies and bertha armyworms reported.

Northwest

  • Frost reported in localized areas.
  • Barley swathing is general. Desiccation of peas is well under way.
  • Canola swathing has begun.
  • Bertha armyworm continues to be a problem in the Waldheim, Laird and Rosthern areas. Sawfly problems are evident in field headlands.
  • Sclerotinia ranges from light to heavy in canola fields. Ascochyta is present in field peas.

Alberta

Cool temperatures and heavy rains have delayed harvesting.

Peace River

  • Frost was reported for much of Peace, ranging from -3 to Ð7 C in low lying areas.
  • Swathing of wheat, barley and canola is general. Crop yield potential is rated very good to excellent.
  • Bertha armyworms a problem in Eaglesham and Wanham areas.

Central

  • Swathing of early barley, peas and canola is under way.
  • Canola maturity variable.
  • Lodging in cereals is a concern because it will slow swathing.
  • Rust is prevalent in spring wheat. Sclerotinia is evident in many canola fields.
  • Pastures are good. Silage operations under way with good yields.

Northwest

  • Light frost was reported in the western areas.
  • Swathing under way for early barley, canola and wheat.
  • Crop yield potential is very good to excellent. Lodging of cereals is a concern.

Northeast

  • Swathing well underway in early barley and canola. Yield potential is good to excellent.
  • Wheat nearing hard dough stage.
  • Spraying continues for the control of bertha armyworms in the Wainwright through to Vermilion-Lloydminster area where some

fields suffered severe damage.

South

  • Winter wheat combining is nearly complete. Swathing and combining of wheat are under way.
  • Barley swathing is nearly complete with some combining and reports of sprouting in the swath due to 100 millimetres of rain.
  • Canola swathing is general.
  • Heavy winds have caused shattering in standing canola.
  • Chickpeas are ripening slowly.
  • Cabbage seedpod weevil damage is showing up in canola.
  • Disease pressure for untreated cereals is high. Spring wheat has been hard hit by rust.
