Organic funding
The federal government has provided $1.3 million to aid the growth of organic agriculture.
The funding, under Agriculture Canada’s Advancing Canadian Agriculture and Food program, included $711,500 for the Organic Agriculture Center of Canada in Truro, N.S.
Another $565,900 is earmarked for developing the Organic Federation of Canada, designed to bring together organic players to raise awareness and help develop regulations.
Campbell honoured
The Canadian Animal Health Coalition recently announced that John Campbell has been selected this year’s winner of the Carl Block award.

The award is given annually to an individual who exemplifies commitment to the Canadian livestock industry and its contribution to the Canadian economy through animal health.
It is presented in honour of Carl Block, one of the founders of the coalition.
Campbell was nominated by the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association because his “dedication to producers, research efforts, approach, honesty, sincerity and respect of farmers and ranchers has helped to position the Canadian cattle industry to be among the best herds in the world.”
Campbell received his doctor of veterinary medicine degree from the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph in 1985.
He joined the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 1991, where he teaches cattle health management and epidemiology. His research focuses on the control and management of infectious diseases in beef cattle operations.

Pork industry awards
Two leaders of Alberta’s pork industry were recognized for leadership and excellence at the annual Alberta Pork Spectra Awards Dec. 5-6.
Former Alberta Pork general manager Ed Schultz of Edmonton received the lifetime achievement award.
Over his 35-year history with Alberta Pork, Schultz served 33 years as general manager of the organization promoting and marketing Alberta pork domestically and overseas.
Alfred Wahl, general manager of Peak Swine Genetics Inc. in Leduc, Alta., received the friend of the industry award.
Over the past 10 years, Wahl has helped build Peak Swine Genetics into a key supplier of genetics to producers in the western provinces and the Pacific Northwest U.S.
