Aware awards

AgAware B.C. has named its top 10 selections for agriculturally aware

farms and ranches in the province.

The third annual farm competition recognizes operations that are

committed to telling the public about what’s happening on their farms.

The winners are Aldor Acres of Fort Langley, Chilliwack Original Corn

Maze of Chilliwack, The Cranberry Lady near Fort Langley, Davison

Orchards of Vernon, Dried Flowers by Judy of Yarrow, Greenhill Acres of

Ryder Lake, Merridale Ciderworks and Farms of Cobble Hill, Fisher Creek

Ag science award

Allen Good of the University of Alberta’s biological sciences

department has been awarded a $10,000 prize for agricultural science

at a recent award ceremony in Edmonton.

Good is working with plant genomics to improve the stress tolerance of

plants. As well, his research focuses on developing genetically

modified crops that require little nitrogen fertilizer.

The prize is called the AVAC/ASTech Innovation in agricultural science

award.

AVAC is an Alberta investment group that specializes in agricultural

value-added concepts. ASTech is the Alberta Science and Technology

Leadership Awards that were created to recognize achievement in science

and technogy.

SWP director

Vic Bruce has been elected to Saskatchewan Wheat Pool’s board of

directors.

Bruce served as a pool delegate from 1987-1995 and from 1997 to present.

He holds a bachelor’s degree of education with an economics major from

the University of Calgary.

Bruce also operates a pedigreed seed farm at Tuxford, Sask.

He replaces Gary Wellbrock, who resigned for medical reasons.
