Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts was $84.27 May 21, down from $88.21 May 14.

U.S. hogs averaged $106.80 on a carcass basis May 21, down from $112.25 May 14.

The U.S. pork cutout was $120.86 per hundredweight May 21, up from $115.70 May 14.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to May 22 was 2.393 million, down from 2.395 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.173 last year at the same time.

In Canada, the May 22 Signature Four price was C$232.32 per 100 kilograms, up from $230.41.

The Hams Marketing cash price was $230.32, up from $228.41, HyLife was $246.43, up from $246.06, and OlyWest was $242.50, up from $241.20. OlyWest 2021 was $242.50, up from $240.10, and HyLife’s adjusted price was $246.43, up from $246.06.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 923 sheep and lambs and 36 goats sold May 17.

Sheep sold on a stronger market. Lambs and goats traded at steady prices.

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported that 767 sheep and 90 goats sold May 17.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $365-$400 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $360-$430, 70-85 lb. were $345-$380, 86-105 lb. were $300-$352 and 106 lb. and heavier were $280-$315. Wool rams were $145-$245 per cwt. Cull ewes were $150-$282.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $300-$360 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $350-$385, 70-85 lb. were $340-$370, 86-105 lb. were $290-$335 and 106 lb. and heavier were $270-$305. Hair rams were $170-$280 per cwt. Cull ewes were $113-$340.

Bison

Prices offered by Canadian buyers for slaughter in Canada start at $3.90-$4.15 per pound hot hanging weight for Grade A bison bulls and heifers on light trading. Canadian buyers are offering $4.60-$4.90 for prime bulls and $4.40-$4.60 for heifers for slaughter in the United States.

U.S. buyers are paying US$4 per lb. hot hanging weight for prime bulls from Canada for U.S. slaughter, where slaughter times are booked. Heifers are being purchased at $3.80. Returns to producers are dependent on exchange rates, quality, transportation and export costs.
