Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts was not available Jan.15 and Jan. 8.

U.S. hogs averaged $52.72 on a carcass basis Jan. 15, down from $54.94 Jan. 8.

The U.S. pork cutout was $80.07 per hundredweight Jan. 15, down from $81 Jan. 8.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to Jan. 16 was 2.654 million, down from 2.849 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.496 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the Jan. 16 Signature Four price was C$152.31 per 100 kilograms, up from $147.11.

The Hams Marketing cash price was $150.31, up from $145.11, HyLife was $162.33, up from $156.81, and OlyWest was $145.40, up from $138.90. OlyWest 2021 was $165, and HyLife’s adjusted price was $172.82, up from $169.94.

Bison

Prices offered by Canadian buyers for slaughter in Canada start at $3.50 per pound hot hanging weight for Grade A bison bulls and heifers on light trading. Canadian buyers are offering $5 for prime bulls and $4.80 for heifers for slaughter in the United States.

U.S. buyers are paying US$4 per lb. hog hanging weight for prime bulls from Canada for U.S. slaughter, where slaughter times are booked. Heifers are being purchased at $3.80. Returns to producers are dependent on exchange rates, quality, transportation, and export costs.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 413 sheep and lambs and 27 goats sold Jan. 11. All classes of sheep lamb and goats sold at stronger prices.

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported that 1,159 sheep and 104 goats sold Jan. 11.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $340-$400 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $340-$470, 70-85 lb. were $370-$421, 86-105 lb. were $300-$368 and 106 lb. and heavier were $280-$318. Wool rams were $225-$300 per cwt. Cull ewes were $229-$280.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $300-$365 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $345-$420, 70-85 lb. were $360-$395, 86-105 lb. were $300-$365 and 106 lb. and heavier were $270-$295. Hair rams were $225-$275 per cwt. Cull ewes were $270-$275.
