Declining American hog markets were echoed in Canada last week. In Saskatchewan, the pool price closed at $166.20 per hundred kilograms, down $1.20 from the week previous. Alberta was $1.71 and Manitoba averaged $1.67 on 100 index value hogs.
On the beef side, the cow trade showed some excitement with D1,2 cows ranging from $48 to $62 and topping out at $67.50. D3 cows were going from $36-$55 with the top bids hitting $60. This is about $10 over the year’s average.
Northern Alberta prices for bulls were $56 to $66.
Fed cattle showed steady prices throughout the week. Trade closed on steers from $85-$89 and heifers were $84-$88.85. Eastern Canada was a little higher at $87-$91 for steers and $87-$91 for heifers.
The feeder market probably peaked last week as feedlots filled up.
Six hundred pound weight feeder steers averaged $93.16 with the range between $87 and $105. Heifers in the same weight range were $86.56 with prices moving between $73-$91. Canfax said the wide ranges are because of wide variations in quality.
